In order to achieve Coastal Risk Resilience (CRR) TNC has partnered with risk-modeling and re-insurance companies. TNC and the Red Cross are working together in places like Grenada, Jamaica, and Dominican Republic to help communities adapt to the risks of climate change (e.g. rising seas and intense storms) through nature-based solutions. Reefs and mangroves can be a cost-effective option when compared with grey infrastructure, and they also play a critical role in reducing the social vulnerability of communities.
TNC has also partnered with Swiss Re, one of the worlds largest reinsurance companies, to help understand the economics of nature-based coastal defenses. As a result of this work, TNC is exploring how new nature based insurance products can protect and finance ecosystem based coastal adaptation. We aim to protect and finance nature based coastal adaptation for vulnerable coastal communities and economies.
