Reef Rescuers
by Nature Seychelles (Non-governmental organization (NGO))
The world's largest coral reef restoration program using the coral gardening method. From 2100 to 2015 The project grew 42,000 coral fragments in underwater nurseries and planted an area degraded by coral bleaching, a climate induced stress, covering 5,300 sq meters plus another separate are of 1,500 sq meters. The project is ongoing having discovered "super corals" that resist bleaching and in 2017 planted over 2000 super coral colonies grown in nurseries. More super corals are being nurtured in underwater nurseries. The project has trained 45 national and intentional practitioners in coral reef restoration. It has now set up the Center for Ocean Restoration, Awareness and Learning (CORAL) as an international platform for collaboration.
