Sanctuary at Roche Caiman: Protection of urban mangrove wetland
by Nature Seychelles (Non-governmental organization (NGO))
Seychelles first manged urban wetland, the site was abandoned by the NGO managing it and Nature Seychelles took over in with a lease from Government. The site was restored to become a fully functioning brackish water and mangrove habitat, with a boardwalk, educational facilities and a bird hide. A polyvalent center was constructed on site to cater to various educational and conservation activities. The Sanctuary became the first park in Africa to join the Healthy Parks Healthy People network, an international network which works to recognize the contribution of nature to our wellbeing. In 2011 the Sanctuary was awarded the International Innovation Prize form the World Leisure Organisation. It is managed on behalf of the State with no public or government funds and simply from fundraising by the NGO.
