Protection of marine turtles and nesting beaches through the involvement of the local population
by The GEF Small Grants Programme (United Nations entity)
This commitment will respond to an increase of illegal marine turtle hunting for its meat and eggs, and destruction of nesting habitats. Approximately 30 km of nesting beaches on Boavista Island will be protected from June to October of 2017. Environmental training and monitoring camps will be installed and managed by local teams, and operated with direct collaboration of protected area guards and rangers, national and international volunteers. Awareness campaigns and training will enable community members to be better prepared, and consequently participate actively on the monitoring activities on nesting beaches.
