Conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity in the Carribean Sea Basin
by European Union (Government)
The EU commits EUR 8.5 million for the launching of a call for proposals that will be focused on conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity in the Caribbean Sea Basin.

This action aims to contribute to the protection of marine and coastal biodiversity in the Caribbean Sea basin. This encompasses conservation, restoration and sustainable use of ecosystem goods and services and particularly targets natural areas that are threatened by misuse, overexploitation, pollution and climate change effects, while favouring actions in the field that directly benefit ecosystems-dependent communities and actions that enable stakeholders participation, empowerment, awareness raising and good governance.

14.4
By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices and implement science-based management plans, in order to restore fish stocks in the shortest time feasible, at least to levels that can produce maximum sustainable yield as determined by their biological characteristics
Type of commitment
14.5
By 2020, conserve at least 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, consistent with national and international law and based on the best available scientific information
Type of commitment
14.7
By 2030, increase the economic benefits to Small Island developing States and least developed countries from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism
Type of commitment

Type of commitment
NA
Enhance the conservation status and the resilience of coral reefs and associated marine and coastal ecosystems, with a focus on marine protected areas
NA
Maintain sustainable livelihoods and food security in ecosystem-dependant coastal communities by promoting alternative, biodiversity-friendly income-generating activities and by reducing overfishing, destructive fishing practices, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, as well as coastal degradation and overexploitation due to tourism and recreational use
