The EIB will support projects that contribute to the protection of coastal ecosystems through the reduction of pollution to the marine environment and will continue, in partnership with the EU and peer institutions, to encourage innovation including through investments that contribute to the development of a sustainable blue economy.
Implementation: The EIB has a large global portfolio of wastewater, waste management and other activities aimed at reducing land-based pollution, many of which have a positive impact on the protection of marine ecosystems.
EIB will continue its support of the Mediterranean Hot Spots Investment Programme (MeHSIP I and II) contributing to achieving the EU's Horizon 2020 Initiative which addresses the main sources of pollution entering the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean through environmental investments, capacity building, monitoring, the State of the Mediterranean environment and research. MeHSIP II provides also direct technical support to promoters in the Southern Mediterranean countries for the preparation of investment projects focusing on the reduction of land-based pollution impacting the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean as well as improved climate resilience.
