The EIB will support projects that contribute to the protection of coastal ecosystems through the reduction of pollution to the marine environment and will continue, in partnership with the EU and peer institutions, to encourage innovation including through investments that contribute to the development of a sustainable blue economy.
Implementation: The EIB has a large global portfolio of wastewater, waste management and other activities aimed at reducing land-based pollution, many of which have a positive impact on the protection of marine ecosystems.
EIB will continue its support of the Mediterranean Hot Spots Investment Programme (MeHSIP I and II) contributing to achieving the EU's Horizon 2020 Initiative which addresses the main sources of pollution entering the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean through environmental investments, capacity building, monitoring, the State of the Mediterranean environment and research. MeHSIP II provides also direct technical support to promoters in the Southern Mediterranean countries for the preparation of investment projects focusing on the reduction of land-based pollution impacting the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean as well as improved climate resilience.
By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution
Type of commitment
OTHER POLLUTANTS (please specify)
- Cleaner production
- Industrial effluent pre-treatment
By 2020, sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, and take action for their restoration in order to achieve healthy and productive oceans
Type of commitment
- Integrated Coastal Management
- Ecosystem-based Adaptation
The Depollution of the Lagoon of Bizerte (Tunesia) is an example of one of the investments under MeHSIP II. THe project fincnances investment in wastewater treatment, industrial depollution, and waste management alongside actions proposed by local communities as well as support for the national environmental protection agency aimed, among others, at improving the sustainability of fishing and shellfish-related activities.
