Combatting IUU fishing
by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) (Intergovernmental organization)
The OECD is launching a review of what countries have been doing over the last 10 years with respect to their capacity to combat IUU fishing. This analysis will update previous OECD work on key determinants of IUU fishing and collect data on the current regulatory and institutional situation in OECD countries and beyond. The project aims to provide policy makers with a better understanding of the remaining policy gaps and regulatory loopholes and help identify the tools that some countries could strengthen or introduce to bridge these gaps. Greater transparency on existing procedures and legal systems as well as awareness of the tools at hand should help Governments adopt better approaches to tackle IUU fishing.
The project on Combatting Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing will analyse the information along two lines:
A comparison of the 2005 and 2016 situations will be done to measure policy improvements in OECD countries and other participating economies.
Information on the 2016 situation will be reviewed to identify remaining gaps in legislation and enforcement capacity and point to areas where progress should be pursued

This work should provide useful information to support the follow-up and review mechanism for the implementation of the SDG 14.4.
This activity of the OECD is implemented in close cooperation with other international organisations such as the GFCM and the UNODC.

All countries, even outside the OECD, are welcome to participate to this work.
