Science-based Ecosystem, Species, and Biodiversity Protection
by Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna (Partnership)
The Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna is committed to science-based ecosystem management of our fishery, to ensure thriving oceans for future generations. We have - and are implementing - a very detailed sustainability action plan that ensures that our fishery protects all key species and the oceans. That action plan includes full adherence to the science guidance of the IATTC and full participation in the Agreement on International Dolphin Conservation Program among other commitments.
Related to the UN's commitments, we reiterate 3 commitments of our science-based and ecosystem based approach to fishery management:
--Science-based fishery management: Voluntary withdrawal from fishing bluefin tuna, a pressured tuna species, for 2017-2018
--Science-based fishery management: Goal of 100% Live Release of Sharks, Rays, and Turtles
--Training and skills building: 100% vessel captains and crew retrained on species release techniques in 2017
--Research, monitoring, and compliance: 100% observation by independent scientific observers on each vessel
Progress reports
By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices and implement science-based management plans, in order to restore fish stocks in the shortest time feasible, at least to levels that can produce maximum sustainable yield as determined by their biological characteristics
Type of commitment
- Compliance, monitoring and enforcement
- Science-based fisheries management plans
- Ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF)
- Reduction of fisheries by-catch and product waste/losses
- Eco-labelling, traceability, certification programmes
Increase scientific knowledge, develop research capacity and transfer marine technology, taking into account the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Criteria and Guidelines on the Transfer of Marine Technology, in order to improve ocean health and to enhance the contribution of marine biodiversity to the development of developing countries, in particular small island developing States and least developed countries
Type of commitment
- Scientific, socioeconomic and interdisciplinary research
- Research capacity development
- Training and professional development
