Objetivo: Generar y difundir informacin cientfica confiable sobre el estado de la conservacin de la biodiversidad marina del pas y sus tendencias, que sea de utilidad para la toma de decisiones.
Metodologa de implementacin: El trabajo se inicia con la identificacin de elementos focales de manejo, posteriormente se disean indicadores ecolgicos para el elemento focal y su ecosistema. Los indicadores cuentan con verificadores. Posteriormente se organizan en un solo protocolo por elemento focal de manejo que deber ser oficializado por el SINAC y aplicado por las reas de conservacin u otros socios estratgicos tales como el Servicio Nacional de Guardacostas, organizaciones no gubernamentales de investigacin, la academia, grupos locales que realicen monitoreo participativo, entre otros.
Mecanismos de seguimiento: El seguimiento lo realiza el Programa Nacional de Monitoreo Ecolgico del Sistema Nacional de reas de Conservacin.
Gobernanza: La gobernanza del monitoreo se encuentra en el Decreto Ejecutivo 39747.
