Reducing Lagoon Pollution in World Heritage Site Buffer Zone through Basic Sanitation Facilities (Supported by GEF SGP & Implemented by UNDP)
by Leadership Empowerment Action Development (L.E.A.D) (Non-governmental organization (NGO))
The projects objectives are to provide basic sanitation in Le Morne Village which is an intrinsic part of the cultural landscape of Le Morne since it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project ensures that the poor and vulnerable people of the village are equipped with decent sanitary facilities and contributes to the elimination of open defecation which will reduce microbial wastes in the environment. It also tackles the threat to the lagoon in front of the village that arises due to the flow of effluents and contaminated waters into the lagoon. The project contributes to lagoon protection and marine conservation and so, works according to SDG 14.1 which aims at preventing and significantly reducing marine pollution of all kinds by 2025.

The project has 2 components, the first being the physical aspect which comprises the upgrading of 36 sanitary WC/shower cabinets as well as the installation of septic tanks and absorption pits and other connections as per the specifications found in the survey of the land commissioned. The second component of the project is social and will involve the active participation of the local community in the project through information and sensitization sessions.

The project is in line with the International Waters focal area, the SGP OP6 Component on Promoting Social Inclusion as a demonstration project for poverty eradication while targeting gender equality and youth. It also follows the SDG 6, Target 6.2,that calls on countries to achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls by 2030.
