Avoid, Intercept, Redesign plastics to save our Ocean
by Nauru - CIE (Government)
The Government of Nauru through the Department of Commerce, Industry & Environment (CIE) is responsible for the strategic planning and regulatory aspects of waste management. Solid waste management operations including waste collection & disposal are carried out by the Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation. Municipal waste collected is taken to the landfill, the management and control of the landfill continues to be a challenge. A key concern is seepage which will cause major contamination of underground sources of water.
Nauru is a net importer of goods, importing nearly all of material needs. Litter, in particular single use plastic is an major environmental and Health problem for Nauru. A 2003 household waste generation survey conducted in Buada District shows 30% of household waste is plastics. Litter is also a Health issue providing breeding grounds for mosquito borne diseases and is connected to recent outbreak of dengue.
The Government of Nauru has recently implemented a Waste Segregation Project with the assistance of the Government of Japan. Furthermore a National Solid Waste Strategy was recently endorsed and taskforce was also formed focusing on implementation of the National Solid Waste Strategy.

The Government of Naurus ongoing efforts with our development partners to address issues relating to Waste Management there is a lot more that needs to be done. The Government of Nauru joins forces with PARLEY A.I.R to address Ocean and marine plastic pollution.
