Conservation of sea turtle contributing to biodiversity of Hon Cau marine protected area
by UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme (United Nations entity)
Hon Cau is one of the sixteen marine protected areas in Vietnam and one of the three Green Turtle Sanctuary (Chelonia mydas), one of critically endangered species globally. The waters surrounding Hon Cau have the presence of typical tropical marine ecosystems (coral reefs, seagrass), of high biodiversity value and also habitats and turtles breeding grounds. The sea turtles as well as many rare aquatic species with important economic and ecological value. Sea turtles are an important link in the marine ecosystem, which is considered an indicator of marine environmental quality. Scientists also call sea turtles messengers of the ocean.
The Sea Turtle Conservation Project at Hon Cau Marine MPA contributes to the conservation of marine biodiversity and the development of sustainable ecotourism. Project aims to reduce unsustainable fishing practices along their migratory routes to the island for sea turtle breeding; manage the islands coastal habitats, safely protect sea turtle laying beaches; raise awareness among the local community of the threats to sea turtles and their laying and nesting beaches, and dignify the local peoples role in participating in conservation activities. Enhancing the participation of stakeholders in the protection of sea turtles.
Project activities includes patrolling, awareness raising on marine and turtles conservation, livelihoods support for people to reduce pressure on the MPA and turtles. Project also engages local communities of eight communes around the MPA and youth volunteer in conservation and environmental protection activities, promotes strong collaboration with key stakeholders. Project has been strongly committed by local communities and stakeholders. Especially, local government has provided significant financial support to conserve the MPA and sea turtles.
