#NoPlasticStrawJakarta Campaign
by Navakara - Ways to Zero Waste (Private sector)
Indonesia is the second biggest plastic waste producer in the world (source: Jenna R. Jambeck, ed., Plastic waste inputs from land into the ocean in Sciencemag, vol 347 (2015), 768- 770). Only less than 9% of our recyclable wastes have been recycled properly, and one of the biggest plastic wastes is drinking straw (source: Masse, B., Bumi Kebanjiran Sampah Plastik Sebanyak 8,3 Miliar Ton dan Makin Tercekik (2018), http://www.vice.com). At least 8 million tons of plastic waste ends up in the worlds oceans every year (source: Ellen McArthur Foundation, The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the Future of Plastics (2014))

Plastic waste is current global issue. Therefore, Navakara invited various Food & Beverages establishments to join our project so that together we can reduce the amount of waste before it happens. In this campaign, we are focusing on plastic straws.
This project is at no cost to the F&B establishments, it is part of Navakara's commitment to provide regular and various community service.

Navakaras "No Plastic Straw Jakarta: Campaign:
The mission of this campaign #NoPlasticStrawJakarta is to encourage various F&B establishments in reducing their use of plastics particularly single-use ones, and to increase public awareness about the danger of plastics to both human health and environment.

What we are working on through this campaign:
SAY NO TO PLASTIC STRAWS
Refuse is the first step to reduce our plastic waste. Plastic cannot biodegrade, it only breaks down into smaller pieces. It is also spoils our groundwater through rivers to the ocean, it contains very harmful toxins such as BPAs and PVCs that threaten our health, food chains, wildlife, and the environment4.
LOCAL BUSINESS MATTERS
We support local coffee shops. We want to help your business becoming greener. We can offer some ideas on how to reduce the amount of straws used daily in your coffee shop; which resulting in some cost-savings business operations and environmentally friendlier business processes.
BE PART OF THE CHANGES
Plastic straws take up to 200 years to degrade into small debris! We would like to see any contribution from public on how to be a more conscious consumer, in the form of taking concrete steps and be part of the needed changes towards consciously refusing plastic straws.

Navakara with the participating F&B establishments create fun programs for their customers to participate, with Navakara also provides talk sessions, documentary film screenings, etc. in relations to how to reduce plastic wastes, and why.
This campaign was supposed to be from July until September 2018, but from the feedback we received so far, it looks like we will continue indefinitely and will invite furthers participations from more F&B establishments.
We also look forward to collaborating with other relevant actors in other cities, so that they can duplicate the campaign, and with F&B outlets/providers in their own locations.
