Beach cleaning project on the Swedish west coast
by Västkuststiftelsen / Ren Kust (Clean Coast) (Other relevant actor)
Ren Kust is a joint venture between all local authorities in Bohusln with the following objectives:
1. To collaborate with a view to develop the Environmental Protection Agency for the Bohusln shoreline and archipelago based on sustainable financing.
2. To establish a partnership structure able to utilise and manage contributions offered by businesses and other groups (charitable and commercial).
3. To promote keeping the shoreline attractive with clean beaches and free from any marine debris washing up on our shoreline causing damage to the coastal and marine environment.
4. To contribute towards making marine debris and the removal of washed up marine debris an integral part of remedial measures within the marine environmental directive.

Goal: To establish a coordinated, broader and more effective means of executing operational measures, including improved planning of operational measures and in coordination with general environmental protection undertakings, as well as regional and national development programmes promoting tourism in the field of culture and nature.

Beach cleaning activities along the shoreline and throughout the archipelago were increased each year since the project started in 2012. It is important to make beach cleaning feasible during autumn as large amount of plastic generally accumulate along the shoreline and throughout the archipelago due to strong autumn storms. If not removed, any debris will be carried back to sea during winter as substantial measures are generally not undertaken due to the lack of resources and other issues being prioritised.

Bohusln is included in the bid by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth to double tourism turnover by 2020. The strategic measures undertaken to raise awareness among businesses and organisations about debris washing up on our shores and the threat to our attractiveness, our coast and marine environment under the Ren Kust project are beginning to yield results.

Collaboration between those involved in operational beach cleaning and those involved in environmental protection planning etc. has been established in order to better prioritise between different measures.

Today an established platform exist for beach cleaning, in collaboration between the municipalitys beach cleaning teams, a number of employed entrepreneurs, and numerous volunteers. Efforts are coordinated through a beach cleaning map (GIS) for the Bohusln shoreline that visualises which stretches of the shoreline have been cleaned in the current season and where more efforts are needed. Volunteers can even mark a cleaned beach where the collected litter is placed for pick-up by the municipalities. This function facilitates cleaning through volunteers. The map also collects statistics, serves as a reporting mechanism, and spreads results thereof to the local authorities and the general public.

The enthusiasm for improving and contributing to cleaner waters is growing. Although most of the debris washing up our shores originate from abroad, the ambition of Ren Kust is to ensure that our local authorities and inhabitants will contribute to an enhanced marine environment. This will entail activities to improve consumer awareness and the choices consumers make.
