Coastal Environmental Protection
by Surfrider Foundation Rincón (Non-governmental organization (NGO))
SFR is a volunteer-staffed and community based organization, the only chartered chapter of Surfrider Foundation in Puerto Rico. Our focus is protection and preservation of valuable coastal resources, promotion of sustainable coastal development and economy, and research /educational / citizen science programs to empower communities to manage their own local resources. Towards this end we lead or assist in the creation of nearshore Marine Protected Areas, in particular coral reef systems and surf breaks, and participate in subsequent management processes. We conduct the largest citizen science program in PR, the Blue Water Task Force Rincn, which monitors weekly for fecal bacteria contamination at dozens of beaches and freshwater sites in northwest PR. This program also is a partner in various research initiatives by CariCOOS and/or UPR campuses. We oppose inappropriate coastal development proposals and encourage sustainable coastal tourism and resource use. Besides conducting regular beach cleanups and reef restoration projects, we also spearhead initiatives to reduce solid waste production, install trash facilities at beaches, and support various recycling activities. We regularly provide educational presentations to local schools and community groups. We are members or partners of several governmental advisory boards or councils focusing on coastal zone issues, public health, and climate change.
